Learn how to play other people's music, and most importantly, audiate.

1) the groove
the people have to be able to dance to it. get a solid beat going and you will find some success.
2) the hook
something from your song needs to get stuck in the listener's head ON THE FIRST LISTEN. usually this is a vocal melody but many times songs have instrumental hooks. the more you have in the song the more chances there are for one of them to become am earworm for the listener. aim for at least one instrumental hook and one vocal hook in each section of the song.
3) attitude
when you've got a good groove going and some good hooks interspersed throughout your song, somethings gotta fill in the gaps. this really comes down to image and marketing. try to think what unique personality you can bring to the listener that they can't get somewhere else. it helps to have a naturally interesting, singular voice, but you can put on a vocal affect or focus on writing interesting lyrics that fulfill an untapped niche to fill this category in.
there you go, that's all there is to it. if you can actually create something good out of these 3 things, then you have talent.
