lolno. Classical art was art of the elite. Still is. Why do you think almost no contemporary high art gets promoted and the stuff that does get any exposure is so abstract or dense it can only provoke ridicule and cope from the unwashed masses? Popular culture thrives on mass media. It is by definition consumerist and appeals to the lowest common denominator. Before records, there was no pop music. Music was kept alive through memory (folk music: music of everyday people) and through scores (art music: music of the elite). To listen to art music, you had to go to a concert hall, which required large sums of money and attire and behavior characteristic of the elite. It is an insular community that is against the lowest common denominator.

this is a pretty modern conception of the classical music listening experience. common people heard classical music performed at church and fairs without needing lots of money.
