The Cure was never indie rock mate they are mainly responsible for Gothic Rock/Gothic Post-Punk. Post-Punk bands that incorporated Jangle-Pop like The Smiths, The Bats, Felt, and The Pale Fountains I would agree, but even then those bands are not very similar at all to modern Indie-Rock bands.

Polyphia is a Youtube-famous prog rock band which mainly takes songwriting inspiration from pop and trap music. Its prog but fun. Their songs do end up a little too similar-sounding tho

I'm always looking for young rock bands. I'll check them out.
