I think the canonical explanation would be that Nick was just being a wiseass by feigning ignorance in spite of knowing full well that they're a popular band around those parts. But I think the actual explanation is that The Passing wasn't yet written when Dark Carnival was and it wouldn't make sense for Nick to know who they were if, when the game first shipped, there wasn't a chapter between Dead Center and Dark Carnival.
