ITCOCK is the textbook example and anyone who denies it is just coping.
Candlemass never returned to anything close to the quality of their debut album because they decided they wanted to do Black Sabbath ripoff albums instead. Some of them good, but still.

Bewitched is as good as anything on EDM

I assume the latter because these are nowhere near the best albums by their respective artists

lol the exact opposite is true. people pretend itcotck is their best because they think they're supposed to, because it has such an iconic album cover and it was so groundbreaking. there's absolutely no way anyone can listen to larks, red or discipline and still think itcotck is better, they're all unironically just lying to themselves. case in point: the amount of people that desperately try to convince themselves that moonchild is a good song

I just can't. It sounds so tired, it's not just Ian's vocals being a shadow of its former self it's just completely devoid of energy. It was the same with Ian's Brick 2 and Homo Erraticus. He'll never retire but the spirit hasn't been there for the last 20 years.

Bewitched and Samaritan are great, but not at all as good or even as inventive as anything on EDM. And they're 2 songs from an album packed full of mediocre tracks.
Moonchild is a bit too long for what it has to offer, but it can hardly ruin an otherwise perfect album.

I still don't get what people like about this one at all. The title tracks are passable but padded out far too much, the rest is completely forgettable.

It's good, but the best track, that being of course Fallen Angel, is just barely as good as I Talk to the Wind. Schizoid, Epitaph and Court are in a league of their own and nothing here comes close to being as iconic as any of them. Moreover, you can't talk down Moonchild and then ignore Providence. Even if I were to concede that Starless is deeply beloved by many and perhaps I just don't get that one, that's still just one track.

I'd hesitate to even call this progressive rock. It only makes sense to like this best if you don't even like the purported genre.

King crimson switches up their style and sound a lot i can see anyone thinking any of their early output being their best.

I Agree with Candlemass. The rest just doesn’t come close. The production on the debut album was fantastic.

Moonchild is literally filler. It's not good free improvisation, it's not good ambient, it is LITERALLY and OBJECTIVELY just filling time for the album – admitted by Fripp himself – and if you think it's good you're delusional and/or haven't heard any good free improv or ambient.
Epitaph is pretty boring too and the title track, while great on the first few listens, does repeat too much for its own good. FYI I Talk to the Wind is the best track.

You have a narrow view of progressive rock then, but either way the genre it belongs to doesn't affect its quality, that's like saying Laughing Stock can't be Talk Talk's best album because it isn't New Wave.
Islands and Starless are also better than ITCOTCK btw, I just named the most obvious ones.
