I think I might have finally been metalpilled
Is Metal not supposed to be taken entirely seriously? Not in a bad way, but in the way that it’s campy and self aware that it’s corny
Either that, or it’s meant to evoke anger by being as loud as possible
Been listening to Sabaton, Daughters, Nine Inch Nails, and Dragonforce and enjoying them. I usually hate metal but it can be pretty fun.
What are some other bands like this that are A. Campy and self aware or B. Actually sound genuinely angry and not just edgy
Metalpilled
wait you took it 100 percent seriously before? its just an expression of anger
yeah, I thought the melodrama was a genuine thing
I strongly dislike anime as well and thought since all the weebs I know are metalheads, that metal must also be serious
no no no no NO
it's at most half serious
just look around for what you like, i for one like power and stuff like that. check out angra
listen to strapping young lad
NIN is not metal
Yeah, it's just campy and fun music with catchy riffs to get drunk and headbang to. You really thought the slasher movie lyrics were serious? Cannibal Corpse will get on stage with costumes and elaborate stage sets and fake blood to sing about brootal murder, but at the end of the day, they'll go home in limousines to fuck their model wives in their LA mansions. It's all just for show, and the people behind it are as normal as they come.
Metal is and isn't supposed to be taken seriously. To play actual metal it takes years of dedication to an instrument of choice. Whoever makes a good metal record takes music seriously and the listener should take the creation seriously. The corny aspects lie in the lyrics and aesthetics, but it's not always the case. Naturally, the creator won't take every aspect of his creation seriously, but that doesn't mean that what you call corny is meant to be taken as an irony or some shit like that. It's simply pure fun. To look at metal as some sort of ironic art form is an absolute misunderstanding of what metal stands for. You take everything seriously and have fun because you don't give a flying fuck about looking silly. You take nothing seriously apart from the raw passion that creates art.
I advise you to stay away from metal. It doesn't seem to be your kind of music. There's plenty of cool shit out there.
Metal is NOT an expression of anger. To view metal in that manner is a sign of not understanding metal, at all. Metal can express anger, but it can also express melancholy, grief, insanity, deep feelings of introspection and basically everything that could be expressed in a mighty, triumphant, theatrical way. Reuniting all of these colours under the anger category is as far from the truth as possible. Punk is a lot angrier, especially since it barely has any depth.
>Metal can express anger, but it can also express melancholy, grief, insanity, deep feelings of introspection and basically everything that could be expressed in a mighty, triumphant, theatrical way.
What bands do you have in mind when you say something like that?
>To play actual metal it takes years of dedication to an instrument of choice
>Punk is a lot angrier, especially because it barely has any depth
I would say metal is split on this. On one hand, you have the caveman riffs kiddies who just want the strongest simplistic, immediate emotional response from their music the way a punk fan would. On the other hand, you have all the tech- and prog- fans who want their music to be so complex that the bands have to rely on studio equipment to make it, as it would be physically impossible for a human being to play it as it is on the record. Most bands lie somewhere between these two extremes, but technical skill and "depth" is certainly not consistent across all of metal.
Neither is Daughters. Sabaton and Dragonforce barely count either.

Sounds like Manowar

Not that guy but doom metal is all about melancholy, here's a great example

Bait thread but since all bait threads get serious replies on Any Forums I'll add my two cents.
Agree with most of this. Metal music that fully embraces a metal aesthetic and metal tropes is a bit like pro wrestling, performers and fans alike are aware it can seem melodramatic, bombastic, even cheesy...we just don't care cause it's what we enjoy.
>Metal can express anger, but it can also express melancholy, grief, insanity, deep feelings of introspection and basically everything that could be expressed in a mighty, triumphant, theatrical way
Honestly metal can express just about anything IMO, obviously certain themes are more "metal" by default but metal bands have written about any topic and expressed any emotion
Sounds like you should check out Timeghoul

Have you tried listening to the classics?
Most of it is tongue in cheek or trying to sound angry but there are quite some disturbed people.
I mean, you can take off your spikegimp mask and make yourself a sandwich, but you can't simply unburn that invented cross from your forehead.
The metal / wrestling comparison seems quite inaccurate. It's more like theatre or operettas, but about dark shit.
>What bands do you have in mind when you say something like that?
Not the person you were replying to but holy shit, check out stuff like Bell Witch or Mournful Congregation. Shape Of Despair, too.

uh i'm pretty sure cannibal corpse don't wear costumes or have elaborate stage sets with fake blood. in fact, they're one of the more boring live acts. they sound great, but they pretty much just stand in place and headbang for an hour.
i'm pretty sure CC don't have model wives or mansions lul
Yeah, cannibal corpse are very into the death metal "band shirt and jeans" costume.
