ITT: Bands and artists that are not as popular/well known as the internet would lead you to believe

I really thought that xtc was this fringe pop music staple that everybody listened to, a la talking heads. It turns out that most folks haven't even heard of them, and those that did have stopped at making plans for nigel. It's a shame.

XTC were never that big, they were always kind of a college rock band. Talking Heads had a few legit top 40 hits. In the UK they sold decently, but in the US were largely irrelevant.

Commercial success doesnt matter really desu

i'm not saying that it matters. it's just that due to the habit of discussing sperg andy and his mates a lot online, i've had a few encounters with people irl where i casually mentioned xtc or partridge and their reaction was either confusion or not knowing what in the world this could be in reference to, and that was surprising to me. i guess i took their niche relevance for granted.

They're way more well known in the UK and continental Europe. There's a lot of UK bands from the 80s that were big over there but never had any crossover in the US. Prefab Sprout comes to mind.

Talking Heads have always been for normies. They sold millions of records, were critical darlings and are loved by basedboys. The only fellow XTC fans I know work in record stores.

All these bands mentioned were very popular in the college rock pre grunge alternative scene in the 80s. No one is still talking about prefab sprout or xtc because it’s just not that good, it’s forty years old and cheesy

>it's just not that good
are you sure user

k4000 sewerslvt and porter robinson aka "the trifecta"

Yea I’m sure. It’s bad
Fuck off shill

>No one is still talking about prefab sprout or xtc because it’s just not that good, it’s forty years old and cheesy
So who is good?

>Makes simp anthems
>A cringe fedora lord to the max
>Proud and open Holocaust denier
Is Andy the straight, hyper sperg bizarro universe counterpart to Morrissey?

not a shill, I work for Sony music, but not in marketing

>>Makes simp anthems
?

There exists a universe near-identical to this one where MJ actually put Behind the Mask on Thriller and they become global superstars. A shame we will never see it come to fruition.

XTC werent 100% unknown. They had a couple albums chart in the 40s range in the US which isnt as bad as some other big UK acts that never made it overseas, and Mayor of Simpleton even hit the hot 100. Dear God video got some play on MTV as well.

Technically they had more chart success in America than The Smiths did

xtc were fairly popular in Japan, or at least they have a cult following there.

>Oh, look what is this pigeon down in the hole
>Well, I know, sir, this strange being was once abundant on the Earth
>They would roam in great herds and many made important decisions
>But now they are virtually extinct!
>Some say...they were called man!
There are definitely other examples than this, but it's the first one that springs to mind.

Morrissey solo had more chart success than them, and The Smiths have almost certainly sold more records in the states now.

True
Smiths are definitely bigger today and solo Moz did well in America during the 90s, but in the 80s chart positions technically XTC had a couple albums chart higher and were able to get a hot 100 single while The Smiths couldnt.

>chart positions
>record sales
Still forgettable cringe shit

National cult followings can get really weird. Italians and Van der Graaf Generator is another one. The album with this song on it hit number one on the charts there

hold on a second here. michael jackson and yellow magic orchestra worked together? what's the story?

Quincy Jones showed Behind the Mask to MJ somewhere around the early stages of Thriller. He liked it so much, he wanted to do a cover and release it. The band signed off, and he even recorded it but there was some middleman trickery afoot. It seems Japanese are especially rotten about this, not just in music. So they cut it out. The track was not made available till after he died. (Clapton actually got to release a version in his lifetime)

To be fair, who DIDN'T they work with?
