I'd like to learn to sing but my voice is so naturally unpleasantly nasal that I cannot sing a simple melody without sounding awful, starting to think I might be just not capable of singing well.

Sorry champ but country is the best style sing through the nose. Goat:

What style do you want to sing like?
the singer that inspires me the most is scott walker and 60's pop tunes in general and also nick cave who, granted, doesn't have the nicest voice but still I'm so far off tonally it's not even funny
I guess I could do like a kurt vile thing or something but it's not exactly the kind of music that inspires me to sing and make music
Oh he just slides between normal chest voice and mixed voice. Start with chest voice by learning yarling. It is by far the easiest style of singing because you only use one vowel shape. Make an Errr sound then practice some pearl jam songs and focus on pitch and singing through your chest not your nose. You are probably tightening your palette too much. Lift the middle of your tongue and feel the muscles under your tongue and above the underside of your mouth relax. Once you have chest voice and can sing in pitch with a decent timbre with only the er vowel shape move on.
Stone temple pilots are even easier. Learn plush.
Hey, can you recommend how to sing like jamiroquai? Im lyrics baritone, sound like Anthony Kiedis
sounds good, I never learned how to use chest voice so I'll try that out, thank you user

Yes, Jamiroquai is my favorite band. With him it is all about the vowel shape and inflection. Biggest tip is the higher you go use o, u and e. Avoid a and i as they sound shrill and unpleasant. Keep in mind on record he does a lot of falsetto but live he is pure head choice. Notice he inflects vowel changes. "uahh hayud nao reasun to be cauuh free" not I had no reason to be care free. You have to match his vowel sound inflection changes while maintaining good timbre and pitch. It is very difficult. Start with falsetto and move on to head voice. Falsetto is far easier because it requires less volume control and power. With falsettoo you are stretching the vocal chords thinner to hit the pitch. Like playing on thinner strings. With head voice you are actually zipping them tighter like fretting a guitar high up. The control on head voice is therefore much harder. I would start with some bee gees first then some of his easier stuff like seven days in sunny june. Virtual insanity is the hardest because it is the highest in range and all head voice.
*head voice not head choice lol
Wow thanks for that post. But how I differentiate between falsetto and head voice? I can sing like Mickey mouse, think i have some breath support while doing that, but for some reason can't feel my nose
Strange
Falsetto is breathy and wispy like when you try to talk like a girl. Head voice is powerful and resonates at the top and back of your mouth. Another tip is kind of smile and lift up your tongue in the back while keeping the tip on your bottom teeth. This shapes your mouth in a way that produces better timbre for higher pitches. The lower you go the more open your whole mouth cavity and the higher the more raised your tongue and mouth. But honestly falsetto and head voice use basically the same mouth shapes to sound good it is just a matter of power and control.
Also i can add that when I sing Bruno Mars, Maroon 5 it sounds more natural and easier. While singing Weeknd and Jamiroquai I sound like Mickey. I think singing in a thicker sounds works better for some reason
It's probably the vowel sound changes and you aren't good at a specific vowel maroon five and bruno mars don't have as much vowel sound changes mid note.
nit OP but holy shit. is this what vocal coaches teach?
you need sex, drugs and keke
Vowels and head voice, got it
