5 members is usually ideal for a fully fleshed out sound.
>singer/rhythm guitar
>lead guitar
>bass guitar
>drums
>auxiliary

depends on what kind of music you like and want to make. I'd prefer 6 or 7. but there have been a lot of great 3 and 4-piece bands.

5 but if you have a rhythm guitarist your music is shit

Rush, Cream, and ELP were both three pieces and had varied and dynamic sounds, while The Who and Led Zeppelin basically had the same lineup but got an extra dude for vocals.
It depends how much you want each specific person to do. With one guitarist, they need to play lead and rhythm at the same time, whereas having two eliminates that. With folk, having multiple interweaving leads works well too. You could do what The Doors did and drop the bassist and get a keyboard player, who can do bass with left hand / feet and alternate between rhythm and lead with the right hand.
Basically, you can mix and match. They Might Be Giants had a fucking accordian player and a guitar player, and used a prerecorded drum track

Currently playing in a band with 8 people:
Singer/rhythm guitar
Lead guitar
Bass guitar
Two drummers
Keyboards
Two backup singers

Honestly I alternate between thinking it sounds totally overloaded or that it's actually the perfect number of people

Bump

11

>Singer
>Guitarist
>Bassist
>Drummer
>Keyboardist
>Two Trumpets
>Two Trombones
>Tenor Sax
>Bari Sax

It's 8

>vocalist
>guitar
>guitar
>bass
>drummer
>auxillary dummer
>sampler
>turntablist

4 is perfect. Bonus if the singer can play guitar. 5 usually becomes too diluted unless one guy is writing all the songs. 3 is too limited

needs one more auxiliary drummer

>Guitar
>Synth
>Bass
>Drums
One of the instrumentalists is also the lead singer. This is the best dynamic.

>ground = black metal
>not ice, ghost, or dark
retarded

optimal is two members. too many is 6+.

1. Guitar/Keys/Piano
2. Bass
3. Drums

Someone does singing (or nobody does).

This is the ideal.

>one instrument focusing on leads
>one instrument focusing on harmony
>one instrument focusing on rhythm
>one instrument focusing on the beat
That's it. Four is great but a guitar/keyboard can take care of both leads and harmony so three is more than enough as well. Vocals are fucking stupid and detrimental to music so I'm not including that.

(You) should be the only member

>Keith Richards
????

>Guitar
>Organ/Keyboard/Synth
>Drums

This is hands down the best Jazz Trio sound

arbitrary question but depends on style. e.g. rock id say 3 piece, less being more

see: cream, hendrix experience

any more you become prog-trash, and ive never been a fan of bands with both lead guitar/rhythm guitarist setups. also agree with sentiment of 4 piece (3 instrumentalists/ 1 singer)

>fusion

Literally just put as many people that can play an instrument that you can find into your band.
