Linux handles file permissions with 3 sets of categories, user, group, and everyone else. For each category, you can have 3 different permissions, those being read, write, and execute. In the name of efficiency and simplicity, these three options are represented as bits (binary). The sum of those three bits turned on is less than or equal to 7 (111 = 1+2+4). Read and write are the first two bits, so that would be 110, or 4+2+0. If all three categories have read and write enabled, that would be 110 110 110, or 666. If everything was enabled for all groups, it would be 777 (111 111 111)
