Because a browser (extension) can use CSS or (java)scripts to block more than a simple DNS blacklist can (unless you MITM your own traffic).

I don't think it's a honeypot, but it requires root and is just inferior to DNS blocking. Though for more accurate blocking you may find you need to set up a DNS server yourself.
