His name is Jose and he's the first character you end up helping in Balan Wonderworld, as he sank into despair after a freak storm destroyed his harvest. The game gives him the very impressive-sounding title of "The Man Who Rages Against The Storm", which prompted people to start treating him as a much more serious character than he actually is. Afterwards, people started joking that he was the sworn enemy of Vergil, "The Storm That Is Approaching". After Stranger Of Paradise became a thing, the comically edgy nature of the newly revealed game prompted people to start adding other edgy character's as Jack's allies - Vergil, one of the most famous edgelords in video games, and Jose, who as previously established, was jokingly considered super edgy.
