Lufia does have charm but holy shit is it repetitive with its dungeons and random encounters. Lufia 2 at least has lots of puzzles and lets you skip random encounters.

i played the first game before playing lufia 2
and holy shit is unplayable without the cheat code to move on the overworld as the same speed and in the towns, and spamming sweet water to reduce the encounter rate
Lufia 2 is superior in every possible way, except the story which is shit. You wander 70% of the game doing fetch quests for no other reason but "i have to save the world".
Also the ancient cave is the best side quest ever designed on any RPG
