Sonic is popular among autistic children for being 'cool' and fast, it tickles a different part of their brain. It's true that most furries are autistic sure, but the reason they like furries in general is different from the reason they like Sonic. There's even this weird rift between Sonic furries and regular furries where they often hate each other.
Furries are obsessed with common or cool animals, this means they gravitate towards domestic animals and animals with a certain reputation. Cats, dogs, horses, wolves, it's really easy to see the trend going on here.

You know I honestly wasn't expecting any actual answers when I made this thread, but this is actually really insightful and I've never considered it at all before now. What's a hedgehog in a world of dogs, cats and wolves? Even with Sonic's popularity I rarely ever see any non-Sonic related hedgehog furry OCs, and hedgehog characters are rare outside of Sonic and Animal Crossing in general. Still, it's a shame things ended up this way considering Sable was arguably the most popular female character before New Leaf.

Outside of announcements and standing outside during some events, Isabelle does just about as much as Sable with barely any of her qualities besides an appealing design. I won't deny that there's plenty reason for people to like her, but a large part of her popularity comes from Nintendo wanting a new mascot for the franchise and shoving her everywhere they could think of during the 3DS/Wii U era.

Not only is Ankha is hardly her own character, sharing the exact same dialogue as the dozens of other villagers with her personality type, she's really only as popular as she is because a few years ago a self-admitted pedophile made a porn animation about her, and another pedophile started drawing her so much to the point that people thought she was his OC. Before that hardly anyone cared about her outside of that "double peasant" comic. But whatever, it is what it is.

It sucks how the special NPCs are treated in general nowadays. They all have birthdays but you can't do anything. They all have lots of dialogue and things to say, but it's all locked behind you owning their amiibo cards. It's no wonder people started caring less about them after City Folk. But at least New Horizons handled them (The ones that returned for the main game anyway) much better than New Leaf did.

Nearly every character besides Isabelle had their personalities stripped away for the sake of streamlining. Blathers and Sable are probably the worst examples, with the former having all of his funny dialogue for each specimen completely taken away, and the latter never really mentioning her past when she opens up to you and ultimately being chained to a QR code machine once you're done, so every time you want to talk to her she assumes you just want to use the machine. Thankfully New Horizons fixed both of them.

I think they were always hedgehogs in Japan, but for some reason they were localized as porcupines all the way to New Leaf. New Horizons actually makes a point to correct this, with a lot of dialogue from the two referring to themselves as hedgehogs.

Throughout the series since Wild World there are hints here and there that Sable and Tom Nook have deeper feelings for one another, but it never really goes anywhere beyond those hints. At the same time there's also hints that she has a thing for the player. Especially in Wild World, where she has dialogue like and pic related while also stating that she saw Nook as more of an older brother figure. Unsurprisingly this was toned down in future games, besides the part where she gets embarrassed by Mabel teasing her about asking if you'd stop by today before they even opened.

She was the OG Animal Crossing waifu for the longest time. Even when the games' lore steadily progressed to the point where it looked like she might get to know Nook again, players still were very attached to her. Don't know if I'd call her my favorite AC girl but she always had a special place in my heart, and still does. Then Isabelle happened and everyone got swept up by the cute new puppy. Usually when a franchise gets a new popular female character and everyone likes her, she gets a bit more attention than the others for a bit but things eventually settle down. Yea, iirc weaver ended up being more drawn to isabelle, and swain ended up ditching the community entirely because he disliked NL. Personally, I started in 2018, but I started with WW so I got a very different kind of experience, and going to the community to discuss it felt like going to a wasteland. I suppose that's also part of the reason I want to try to draw decent AC stuff so much, because most of the AC community sure as hell doesn't.

What do you think I've been doing for the past three years? Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad my work has gotten popular enough to make more people aware of her, but I still feel like I could be doing so much more. Develop her story further. Rather than resetting back to zero every time, with each game she becomes more and more open. Maybe she offers to leave work on occasion and hang out, etc.

That's actually very true. Due to the nature of the series you can never really have the special NPCs become "attached" to the player character because canonically it's a different person every time, or it's as if a significant human never existed in their lives until the start of the new game. Which I can definitely understand, though I'd like to see how the same human character canonically sticking around for multiple games would play out.

New Horizons' villager dialogue is actually pretty good once you have a high friendship level with them. Some of it is arguably on the same level as Wild World's. The problem is that the dialogue you have to endure before you get to that point is indeed some of the worst. Thankfully a recent update toned the contextual dialogue ("Hey you hit a lot of rocks yesterday! You dug up a lot of fossils!") down a lot. I think they've been adding new dialogue through each update but I don't know how much.

I played the first AC on the Gamecube back in the day not long after release and even then you could already find universal codes for NES games, the Mario items, etc. on GameFAQs, CheatCodeCentral, and the other forgotten code sites. Sometimes with a typo, unfortunately, which was a pain, or between total bullshit fake codes, but they were out there.

Man, it's been so long since playing any of the games (mostly Wild World, which I spent the most time on because fuck yeah, handheld!) that I barely remember everything she had to say, but I remember feeling weird about it. I kind of don't wanna go back and replay everything lest she actually does become my waifu. especially since I already have a singular waifu and it's just as embarassing

Honestly the worst part of really getting to like a character is knowing they're not popular enough to warrant people drawing art of them, even though you personally would love to see more.
Which then leads to the conundrum of either shelling out big bucks to people who likely don't give a shit about them the same way you do, praying that someone finds out about them and draws them doing stuff you like or, for the extra masochistic, having to learn how to draw in order to produce content for that character.

customization in itself is far from a bad thing, but ac swung way, way too fucking hard in the other direction, it's not even that there's too much of a good thing in this case but that they've neglected literally everything else in the name of letting people make pretty islands so they can get twitter dopamine
over the years i've noticed that the sims and ac both suffered the exact same demographic shift - sims 1 and the first animal crossing were incredibly experimental for their time. they didn't really have a defined audience and both games tried to spark creativity in players and encouraged sharing user-made content or visiting other people's villages and what have you. both of these games became unexpectedly and wildly popular and inadvertently kicked off the casual game boom that led to the rise of freemium facebook games and mobile gachashit. society changed, the gaming industry grew and grew and suddenly both series were a half-baked hollow fucking husk of their former selves. they're both safe, squeaky clean and politically correct, they're explicitly designed to appeal to the 20-something instagram hoe crowd of trendy millennials and have basically nothing going for them besides their in-game creation suites anymore and most of the people who made the originals so fucking good have either vanished or blatantly sold out. neither of them have remotely comparable clones and the few indie ones that have popped up either fucking suck or are still pre-alphas at best.

It's funny, placing furniture and stuff outside (instead of having to Action Replay in the few world models that you can place, and then have them stuck there permanently, or New Leaf's handful of town building-model things) was always something I wanted, but outright terraforming just feels like too far. Adding one more bridge over a river was enough. Not once did I ever restart a town in a fresh AC game more than once or twice, and that was just because I'm autistic and my first town ever on the GC had apples as fruit and it feels fucking weird if I don't have apples as my default town fruit (not even worrying about grass pattern)- never worried about layout or anything. You rolled with the town layout you got and that was it, and if Nook's Cranny was 7 acres away in a weird spot, you just got used to it, and eventually knew it by heart. Because it wasn't your town, but it became YOUR town. If that makes sense.

Sims 2 was a vast improvement over the original and showed a lot of passion in it's design, even if minor things like the pic you posted were just removed for no reason, it's really just a shame that so much content that was built into the game was removed or turned off, things like an actual basement setting or sub the sub grid and 45 degree rotations.

Wild World is kinda like that too. I still don't like how it took away so many of the overworld features, size and activities that made GCN great only for some of them to still be missing to this very day (Although City Folk being a lazy copy of it instead of a proper expansion on what GCN did with WW's features added is more to blame for that) but it was still brimming with soul, especially with the special NPCs and their episodes. Sable's depiction in that game in particular is why I love her so much.

no you're right, sims 2 was always my favorite and it's a better game than the original in almost every single way, it just doesn't have as many weird sociological undertones and creepy shit in it and sims 1 is the prototype for every game that followed so that's why i highlighted it. it's easy to make basements even without a basement tool, there's a cheat that turns on diagonal rotations and a mod that makes more objects work with it, and there's another mod that readds the prank calls from sims 1 lol

It's wierd you'd think they'd just have a list of features that they'd consider mandatory to keep between new entries, not even big ones like more Nook's Cranny upgrades, small things like the balls that the player and animals can interact with. Animal Crossing is reaching it's peak graphically, they will be able to reuse most of the content made for New Horizons when developing a sequel, which would allow them to be more ambitious in terms of content in the game, but you know they won't, they have general animations for all villagers, they resources they'd spend on just redoing those same animations should be used to create animations for all characters interacting with all the things you place down, so you can see them climbing up and sliding down slides, and better AI, but you know it's not coming, they just don't think that way.

I know that you can do these in game, but I think it's EA meddling that caused them to be left incomplete since early designs had a proper basement system.

When I made this thread, I was honestly expecting it to end the same way all my Sable threads do: Either dead and archived after ten posts, or kept on life support through me bumping it over and over while no actual discussion takes place, only for it to end up getting deleted by a rogue janny for no reason.

So you can imagine how surprised I am to not only see it thriving, but actually remaining on-topic without taking any dark turns. It also warms my heart to see that so many of you appreciate my work. I'm in a similar situation with the same feelings, but I don't think it's too late. Lots of artists and creators start later in life, as in 60s and later even.
The world needs more "older" artists because there's been such a divide in things due to the internet's rapid development, people have different perspectives and that's something really shines through in art more than anything else.

I have ideas and things and worlds I want to create, stories I want to tell, yet I lack the ability to recreate them as I see them in my head- and lack the trained imagination to flesh them out beyond basic concepts and set pieces. And the thing I fear is that no matter how much I sketch or write down to save, by the time I have the ability to create what I want- if ever- then I won't remember the concepts I wanted to make in the first place, or worse, will no longer be interested in them at all.

Having never visited that general, that does unfortunately sound like the fate of most generals. Cults of personality form, discussion is taken off-site (note that these two can happen in either order), and the actual threads inevitably end up dead or filled with unrelated garbage. It's a shame, but a predictable one- something about /vg/ just attracts those types, I guess. Hence why one off threads like this are so nice- a bunch of anonymous folks talking about something they like for a while, everyone has their fill, and then the trains in the night finish passing.
