Trading costs can sometimes be very high. Powering stuff up to 50 is costly, especially if it's shadow.
Being flippant with powering stuff up that won't improve your raid performance or serve a purpose in PvP will come back to bite you.
Basically don't power up stuff until you actually need to use it. Also don't evolve stuff prematurely because Niantic can pull bonus moves out of anywhere at any time, like Psychic on Alakazam.
I'm saving a couple of 98% Ralts and Kirlia for their eventual mega raids, where they are likely to get access to a new move (or synchronoise again).
