Snorlax actually has a direct example of having Dream Eater used on it and getting so pissed it woke up, which makes at least 3 Ashmons that would have done more against Spiritomb than JOBbernite.

Lysandre's Gyarchad withstood two dragon claws, high jump kick, thunder punch, dragon pulse, quick attack, cut, and thunder bolt whilst simultaneously defeat Goodra, Noivern, Hawlucha, and Talonflame. Only the combined might of Alain, Ash, and Malva were able to take it down. Meanwhile, Gastrodon died to a couple rocks and a quick attack. The ""champions"" of the M8 are lucky that Lysandre isn't alive to show them just how weak they truly are. They're nothing but big fish in a small pond.

I understand why they made up the retirement plot. They want us to root for Cynthia for when they make Ash ultimately lose to her. They want to soften that blow, and then make us root for her against Leon. Since we know this would be her final battle, it makes it much more narratively impactful than a 10 year old with a team full of nobodies.
