A lot of the old games had very dark elements

Id say gen 3/4 were the darkest since gen 1 was just way too vague about itself. 2 really didnt have anything going on but 3 and 4 were literal apocalyptic scenarios waiting to happen and gave you a sense of urgency to stop what was happening.

USUM will always be the darkest games because of the knowledge that the villains of gen 1-6 plans went off without hitch and the fact that ultra ruins exist. Never mind all of other down to earth dark shit in base sun and moon.

Gen 1 is more eerie than flat out dark. Reading computer logs that just say shit like "MEW gave birth", most of the Pokedex entries, etc.

Maybe if you're a feminist seething over being overshadowed by the trannies.

>literal apocalyptic scenarios waiting to happen
That's part of what makes them not dark, just completely ungrounded and ridiculous. Most children's show features some moustache twirling villain who wants to rule/destroy the world.

>we want to summon the pokegod of the sea to flood the earth!
>we want to take over this high tech company to make money, btw in the process we murdered the mother of this now orphan pokemon!

which do you think sounds darker?

Clearly the one that's going to cause a massive amount of lives being lost. Like how is that even a question? It feels like people cannot grasp the concept of massive amounts of people dying for whatever reason because its not a "personal" story to them.

>It feels like people cannot grasp the concept of massive amounts of people dying for whatever reason because its not a "personal" story to them.
that's how human perception, works yeah

>say that thousands of people die of starvation every minute, you'll feel nothing
>show a picture of a couple starving kids and your empathy kicks in

and by your logic Avengers is so much darker than [insert any serious movie] because thanos wants to destroy reality or whatever which means everyone in the universe could die.

Youre an idiot. The whole point is that the story makes you feel connected to the people in it. Youre trying to make an argument against it by literally making an argument for it dumbass. Same logic applies to animal abuse, you never fucking think about it but as soon as sarah mclaughlin comes on and puts a bunch of sad pictures with a sad song you gain empathy BECAUSE YOU FEEL CONNECTED. You dont get that at all in gen 1 because team rocket has no depth. Hell even gen 2 actually makes them more like villains because atleast the characters have emotions towards their actions like kurt and mary. In saffron the biggest issue is them being in the way of the gym door and they have no presence in celadon except a casino that keeps running with or without them

How the fuck is some old perv supposed to be dark? Do you think master roshi is
>LE DARK AND EDGY

So do the newer games?

But I didn't play SwSh.

lmao imagine thinking XY is dark more like dumb

Yes? Pokemon being used as sacrifices during wartime. Kalos wiping out their competitors across several conflicts. Its the only time ever addressed Pokemon world's history in such a way. Beyond the usual "Oh Pokemon are our friends, haha!" mantra.

"le dead pokemon dark"
no. Eternatus alone is darker than gen 1. The dead child in motostoke. Mewtwo lore is also darker and deeper than muh le laveneder

The darkest thing about Gen 4 was the Old Chateau. It has the scariest theme in pokemon in my opinion and there's no explanation for anything concerning the ghosts.

In Gen 1, pokemon literally helped with killing japs in WWII and most of the characters would have been baby boomers born right after the war

Um, it was really dark. The leader of the evil team wanted everyone and all pokemon to fucking die. Depending on the version, when he shoots off the ultimate weapon at himself he either outright dies or is immortal but trapped under ruble for all time. Team Flare also invented the Holo Caster to deliver news to the masses (Malava is ex-Team Flare when you fight her in the E4) in order to hide their operations and also to spy on everyone in Kalos.

Yeah but Gen 4 is definitely when the games really ramped up the dark and edgy. Gen 3 was really light. Yeah the region almost got destroyed, but that was by accident because the villains were retards. Cyrus the edgelord wanted to end this world and become God of a new one in his autistic image, he led a bowl cut cult that did shit like blow up lakes and you watch Pokemon dying (you see it, not just hear about it like in Gen I), Darkrai and Giratina were the legendaries of nightmares -literally. Very appropriate for a time when Death Note was all the rage.

The games never get too heavy, but I would say the Lusamine arc definitely comes close.

What stops Gamefreak from making 1 (uno) serious game with dark tones and plot and maybe even harder difficulty?
