Actually Asuka did everything to deserve all the insults in the world.
Bitch was a menace to society, brought everybody nothing but pain, celebrated Shinji's presumed death only because he had better score than her's and she never had a redemption arc of any sort.
Her entire personality is like a wind-up toy dead set on being the only person in the world that matters and bashing her head on the wall of reality that she's just a person like everybody else until she fucking dies while also hurting everybody else in the process. And while every other Eva character had some kind of progress or realization Asuka never found even a speck of humanity.
Asuka is the closest thing that EVA has to a villain.

The irony is that Shinji acts aggressively in the final scene and Asuka shows compassion. Their roles inverted post-impact. Asuka surpasses Shinji in the end.
