I really like it. Definitely read the manga, though. The anime is fine and has some good music but deviates near the middle of the manga and doesn't have a very good ending. You might check it out after the fact though just to see some moments in motion.

In soul eater madness is something everyone has at varying degrees and the more you stroke the flames of your own madness the more unhinged/powerful you become essentially. It can't be the big bad because it wasn't until centuries after this that he appeared.

Even if I like what happened with Haumea at the end, Amaterasu and the other pillars were absolutely wasted. Shinra and Shou had their reconciliation, and maybe Nataku and Sumire could have been used more beyond the Haijima arc and the photoreal stuff, but nearly everyone was just standing around until the climax. For the character who arguably suffered the most, whose power every entity in the story revolved around, there should have been something said about how their society's prosperity was built on the back of her suffering. The entire setting is essentially a steam/flame-punk Omelas, and seeing as how Nataku, Iris, Inca, and Sumire all either profited or suffered as a result of that structure, the fact that nearly everyone was benched for Haumea's Evangelist-sponsored Misery Crusade feels like a huge waste of potential.
I don't mind this being a Soul Eater prequel, saw it coming after the Benimaru fight (peak of the series btw), but I had imagined that each pillar would use some aspect of their own real-life experiences to break the Evangelist's grasp on humanity. It would empower the collective consciousness to manifest Death in an anthropomorphic form as a desire for Order, rather than continue to submit to the passive nihilism of the Evangelist's stooges. Each pillar would then take on their own fate in accordance with humanity's desire, with Shinra dying as the savior, and Amaterasu becoming the Sun so she could fulfill her desire to torment humanity as a divine celestial authority for all time. Wasn't sure about the others, maybe each could contribute to the collective Madness of humanity, maybe Iris returns as a soul-oriented holy figure because of doppelgänger nonsense, maybe Sumire dances in the void with David Byrne forever.
ShinraBanshou-Man is pretty kino though.

I partially agree. Sumire and Nataku didn't need to do all that much more than they did. Not without a lot more setup and development than they got. Inca's mainly missing a reaction to seeing the past with Shinra. It's Amaterasu and Iris who really got shortchanged. We get to see nothing of Iris' reaction to learning she's the final pillar, or learning that her uneasy feeling is valid and she's Amaterasu's doppelganger. Nor do we get to see her meeting Amaterasu, or her giving into despair. She then stays a spectator for dealing with the Evangelist instead of doing anything to help Shinra. Amaterasu for her part gets no development of who she was before, how she became a pillar or ended up being used as a power source. We don't get to see her reaction to meeting Iris, or her giving into despair and accepting death. For all the time she's spent burning to the point of going mad from it, it really should have been her and not Haumea who needed convincing to reject the end of humanity. The real kicker is that this isn't stuff that would take all that long to include. Probably not more than an extra volume's worth of material spread out over the course of the final arc.

Can't wait for Death to start culling the people that should be dead.

Book of Eibon had a weird ending, Maka and Soul are stuck on the page of sloth while everyone else goofs off on the p[age of anger, Chainsaw dude/ette decides out of the blue to rape Maka and gets so angry his soul explodes despite it being the page of sloth. Make and Soul don't really contribute much, it would have made so much more sense if they escape to the page of anger and then Chainsaw dude explodes from the anger overload.

Also Kid/the Thomason sisters didn't get a third upgrade.
