It actually isn't, humans are a social species carrying tension in both directions. While I myself would like to fuck off from everybody else, I know that many want to have some sort of community with others. That's part of Daniel's tension.
Daniel is fundamentally a good person because he is an atheistic capitalist who actually builds something objectively worth having apart from bullshit silicon valley apps, which are not actually worth having and wrongfully valuated by the population (his worldview is fundamentally correct) who ultimately triumphs over the lie of god by beating Eli/Paul to death, but he is also a very damaged man, as you can see in the OP image. Despite his misanthropy, he seeks desperately to connect with someone. H.W, this weird newcomer who may be telling the truth. It's all based on another lie, he is never the real relative of any of these people.
The simplest way to explain Daniel is that dad abused him (there may have been a sexual component, but not necessarily). So Daniel gets as far away from Fond du Lac as he possibly can, with a productive anger and a complete lack of trust, while it is still possible to extract resources in an old-school way. This fully explains his character.

How is it even remotely close to being a commie movie retard. He rejects anarchism, rejects Michel in his eco-movement, and rejects psychoanalysis (closely tied to marxism at the time). It's just a very pessimist movie with a passively nihilist main character.
