Somehow, the cartoon ended up boomeranging around and actually becoming pretty good, aside from the occasional Curse of the Lion Men-grade episode.

Jim Bynes is the ideal Dr Light voice.

Scott MacNeill is the voice I know best when I imagine Dr. Wily and Proto Man.

Wily yes, but it doesn't really work for Protoman out of the villainous one the show portrayed.

I've tried to imagine the game version of him with Duo Maxwell's voice, but it just doesn't work.

It's campy and it knows it, which helps. And for a cartoon that came out at the time, it had some brief bits of damn good animation and fight scenes. But yeah, that voice cast was pretty good.
Yeah, it works for the snarky villain lackey, not so much for the confused and suffering loner.

I never saw Proto Man as confused and suffering in the games. He always acted more like a confident and slightly-sarcastic loner who does things his way no matter what, even if it's just false bravado.
