Kid Vs Kat, first off, had to work with an inferior budget, so if you wanna harp on the artstyle, fine. Zim's artstyle was so pricy it got the show canned.

More importantly though, Kid Vs Kat actually tried to progress the characters and change the status quo from time to time. Dib from start to finish is a self centered supernatural hunter obsessced with his own egotistic fantasies of stopping Zim.

Coop STARTS out the series a somewhat selfish kid. He fights with his sister, he's a bit of a jock, you know. But things change when Kat shows up. He gets punished for his selfishness on multiple occasions throughout S1 until he gradually starts to work past that, until by Season 2 he's become quite the selfish guy. More on that later.

The status quo changes on multiple occasions. In early S1, Coop and Dennis have no clue what Mr. Kat is. They speculate a lot, and several episodes are dedicated to them getting it wrong or being tricked (The Zombie, Werecat, and Mummy episodes), until the mid-series finale where he's revealed to be some sort of Cyborg that definitely isn't a cat, though we don't learn the details yet. In the second half of the Season, we slowly get hints(such as in the Halloween episode) he's an alien, and it's confirmed in the S1 finale.

Another status quo change involves Kat. In S1, most of his schemes involve either killing Coop and his family, or trying to repair his collar so he can use the teleporter to get back home(his mission was a scouting operation to prep Earth for invasion). At the end of S1, during the Christmas special, when Coop learns Kat has a family of his own, the two grow to respect eachother a bit. Not LIKE, but Kat mostly stops trying to murder Coop and his family after this point, at least directly. He also gets contact with his boss again, so episodes about him trying to fix his collar or build a spaceship to get home stop happening

In Season 2, the status quo changes once more.

Kat now has contact with his boss and a way to get back home, but he's been demoted for his failure and AWOL status, so he's been forced to do grunt work to ready Earth for invasion or run errands for his boss (Stealing earth food, disposing of Catnipia's massive litter problem on Earth, turning water into milk). He's also stopped trying to murder the Burtonburgers, and has build a pocket dimension base in his scratching post.

Coop and Dennis make a new ally in Fiona, Coop's GF, and Coop turns 11. Most of the Season focuses on Coop thwarting Kat's attempts to prep Earth for invasion, constantly taking the blame for his actions and the destruction caused. This was easier for him to justify in S1 when his family was at stake directly, but now he's slowly getting sick of it.

This leads to the two best episodes of the show, Nuff Said and Kat to the Future, both of which deal with Coop's heroism fatigue.

Nuff Said has Coop get sentenced to community service for blowing up the forest. We see he's sick of constantly being punished for saving the Earth, he just wants a thank you. So eventually he breaks, and decides to stop stopping Kat(who isn't directly threatening his family anymore), allowing him to construct his Terraforming Mech. Dennis eventually snaps Coop out of his funk by tellinng him how his family wouldn't want him to let Earth be enslaved, and he stops Kat just in time, getting blamed once again.

Kat to the Future involves Coop accidentally stealing Kat's expiermental time machine, and going back to the day he accidentally encountered Kat and broke his collar. He stops his past self from noticing Kat.

9 months back in the future, we discover Earth has been enslaved. If Coop hadn't stopped him, Kat would have finished his scouting operation, and the Kats would have used their similarity to Earth Cats to infiltrate Earth as pets and put mind control collars on their owners in their sleep

(Sorta like how Audrey II took over earth in the original ending of Little Shop of Horrors)

Coop's family have become rebels trying to fight off the Kat invaders, while this new timeline Coop ended up becoming a collaborator and a slave to the Kats. Coop's family from the new timeline get PISSED when they learn what he did, and they eventually help him steal the time machine back from the Kat base, giving him some words of encouragement.

Near the end of S2, things start coming to a head. Coop is nearly driven insane by psychological warfare, the CIA becomes convinced Coop's family are terrorists, and later Aliens themselves, that kind of thing. Kat eventually gets fired for all his fuckups, and is demoted to work in the gulag litter mines on his home planet.

Coop accidentally gets stuck with him and the rest of his friends, forcing Millie to confront the fact her brother had been right all along, In order to get home, Coop is forced to work his Kat's girlfriend to steal a rocket, and in the end Kat gets his job back. Coop's friends get their memories erased ,and the series concludes on a book end in case they got a third season.
