Flame Princess was an obvious rebound from Princess Bubblegum a relationship that could have worked if the writers weren't gay and didn't hate Finn.

Pen left and the people who took his place decided that "muh deep" was more important than having fun. Also they handled their own shit really poorly whilst gutting everything else but insisted that everything was okay because of the "muh deep" stuff.
Other cartoons started doing what they were trying to do better and so people jumped ship. AT writers continued acting like they didn't fuck up in complete denial of the situation when their viewership plummeted and didn't recover around seasons 5-7.
Luckily they had a dedicated audience of joyless bootlickers so they stayed afloat for a little while even after CN gave up hope and stopped advertising the show. Then CN just cut the crap and pulled the plug on them so they had to rush the final season.
They irreversibly jumped the shark at Breezy.
Real shame, how the fuck do you take over a show like AT and decide it needs to be about fanfic-tier growing up drama and that adventuring, being a hero, and action should take a backseat? And why does that audience of dedicated bootlickers still exist?

I wouldn't blame it on just Muto, a lot of the issues stem from other writers too (Breezy was one of the writers literally projecting his own life experiences with romance on Finn apparently)
He was just kind of the face of the retard team. A key retard but not the ultimate driving force behind the ruin. That was always the change of direction and botched application of "the show grows up with Finn/the viewers" consuming everything. The adult themes and messages behind the adventures became more important than the adventures and action and fun itself and that turned out to be a bad fucking idea. Sucked the joy out of everything. That and their refusal to leave the status quo permanently in a meaningful fashion.
It was just the wrong approach to writing for a show like AT with a setting like Ooo. Mountains of missed potential for actual adventures and cool battles and shit. They almost tapped it too with episodes like Hall of Egress and Islands/Elements but just never went all in. They just ended up with the adventures boring and the action not exciting and cool (and badly animated what in the FUCK was the Three Buckets duel that was boring and nonsensical)
That's my summary of it anyways.
I would have commented on the character ""development"" but that was fucked and I don't even have any thoughts on it besides "what the fuck" jesus that was bad (and made all of them less interesting)

You ever think about how the Demon Blood Sword was probably stupid heavy? There's somewhere around 10 pounds of blood in the human body, but Keeoth was way bigger than a human and thus had more blood. When the Demon Blood Sword was made he used ALL of his blood for it, combine that with just how big the sword was (given that it was made for giant demon hands) and that had to weight somewhere between 13-30 pounds. I don't have the autism to actually calculate the weight of the thing but it had to be really goddamn heavy.

I also want to point out that when Keeoth had IK and Gay Dude hostage he broke the sword over his knee pretty easy to save them. This means that Finn's knee was worse for the sword than being used as a lever to suplex a titanic monster into a pit, or more stressing to the sword than bisecting a flying dragon in half midair. Crazy pain tolerance and endurance

Put simply it wouldn't have been amazing in the long run... BUT it would've been better than what we got without it.

"The boy is a bit of an adventurer but without consequences. Over time he starts having adventures where things don't go great. He wants to be loved but the girl he likes can't reciprocate. His BFF feels sorry for him and helps him find a girl with similar interests." That's the story leading to the relationship. Up to that point it's choppy.

From there the story could've been "He continues to have adventures of all sorts, while also figuring out how to have a real loving relationship... one with some significant but interesting hurdles. Even if the fantasy/scifi adventures are a bit random, the story of his relationship remains a consistent thread leading to an ending where he's got clear accomplishments."

Instead he nuked his relationship because he got a boner watching his girlfriend beat up an old dude with dementia, and his story was seriously schizo, with very little emotional growth (even after finding his parents), and the ending is just a bunch of shit that happens, complete with him getting utterly punked in the second to last ep (saved by Aunt Lolly), and being a side character in the final ep.

Like, damn dude, it's not as bad as Voltron or SVTFOE, but you can't devote whole eps to Finn being terrified of life without a girl to love, then go "he fucked it up, The End of that aspect of the character" and just sweep it under the rug.
