Discovering progressive metal was one of greatest moments for me as a music fan. I was always into weird, quirky thrash (Anacrusis, Watchtower, Coroner, Tourniquet); but listening to Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime for the first time was like a shock to the system. I followed this up by listening to Images and Words, and Awake by Dream Theater; and was instantly hooked. For me, nothing else really comes close to those records; along with the stunningly consistent discographies of Voivod and Threshold. Any recommendations? I was looking to pick up some more Symphony X records, but I don't really know where to go with them. I thoroughly enjoyed Divine Wings; but I wasn't exactly floored by it in the same way I was with the others. The irony is that I tend to dislike long, epic tracks - only a handful of bands can do that well without it coming across as obnoxious.
Anyways, pic related is my absolute favorites from the genre. Death metal or black metal doesn't do anything for me at all, and I despise anything that even hints at being inspired by Opeth.
I sense you have been to the prog power by that chart kek

Opposite preferences to you for metal in general, but Pain of Salvation (try their most recent, Panther, and work backwards) and Anubis Gate (The Detached is my favorite album and a tipping point in their catalog) are two bands in the prog/power realm I actually like.

Bretty good taste senpai, you already know some relatively deep cuts, but some omissions I'm noticing:
Wow, these are great. I have everything from Depressive Age, but forgot to put one down on the chart. It's bullshit how no one has bothered to reissue that Anonn Vin album yet.

some of these may be a little outside your current interest but I'd recommend them nonetheless
It's a good album and at least a third of the tracks lean towards metal, yeah.

>Death metal or black metal doesn't do anything for me at all, and I despise anything that even hints at being inspired by Opeth. Opeth is one of the greatest bands in years and the only good "prog metal" is death metal.
