Not sure if this thread will sink like a stone, but it's worth a try.
Was just listening to Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads.
It's an interesting peak into America's past.

What's with the nasally voices?
Arlo and Dylan did them too. I just don't get it.
Old hillbilly shit
No one cares garndpa
I'm not that old.
There's literally an underground idie folk scene built off of this shit.
Folk appeals to people who care about storytelling in music.
So if you can't get past the singer's voice, that's just called being filtered.

Crazy to think that was the only time he was ever recorded
For me it's less about storytelling and more about culture. Anything from pre 1950's Appalachia for instance is predominately passed down through generations or specifically written for the artists and their kin. It is cultural music, not commercial.

Yeah, and I don't like how some people's cultures talk. Some people's language or accent is irritating to my ear.

Makes you realize the cultural divides in the genre.
Guthrie himself wrote over 5,000 songs, from which only a fraction were ever record.
The sheer creative talent of some of these early artists are very impressive.
Oh I agree, and respect people's work even if it doesn't suite my ear. It's something I've tried to overcome, I just haven't gotten over my ears not liking certain things yet.
Try the Alan Lomax archive user. Covers everything from 1920's rural America to world music into the 70's. With that much volume something will be appreciated. It's really important music

Spring is almost here and I'll likely not have much free time for another 9 months, so it'll be awhile. But thanks for letting me know of that archive.
Neat thing I recently noticed. The motif of a figure covering their face with their arm is recurring on folkways releases around 1953
Another example, been meaning to dig for more
godspeed, user
