Most successful band that completely disregarded image that comes to mind is Pixies, but they aren't successful enough imo.
Are there any bands that reached 'legendary status' that didn't give a fuck about image. Bands like Nirvana, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin all put a lot of attention into image, marketing and promoting, moreso than people realize. Every step is carefully calculated. The music business is as fake and sleazy as any other entertainment industry, but at least in the days of the beatles your image had to at least stem from somewhere genuine and the business had not been completely corrupted yet. I think Nirvana are the last band to hit that peak of legendary fame. Nowadays they can make the best big popstar practically in a lab but they can't get a long expiration date. they're only good for a year at most. next step is to stuff our artificial popstars full of preservatives so we can REALLY extendn their fucking shelf life oh wait thats basically what they're doing with fucking holograms

i dont know, to be fair, they arent as big as the beatles or pink floyd, but where im from a lot more people know them than the ramones or fleetwood mac, and everyone, and i really mean everyone, knows money for nothing, walk of life and sultans of swing are nearly just as well known, in my country, money for nothing is even in the schoolbooks for the english courses, so i personally would call them legendary
